If you’ve successfully tackled a bout of acne breakouts, that’s just half the battle won — often, acne blemishes like raised scars and patches of pigmentation can linger for months and even years. Typically, acne scars form when too much collagen builds up on a spot when a wound is healing, or when glands and tissues around the spot are damaged due to picking.
Acne scarring may be rather common in Singapore, but the psychological effects of it are never easy, especially for more severe acne scars like icepick scars and boxcar scars. However, with the right treatment, many battling with acne scars find that the road to clearer skin is actually possible.
It takes a good doctor to treat acne, and a better one to remove acne scars skilfully. Each doctor has their own way of treating acne scars, and we’ve shortlisted the best three in Singapore with a proven track record.
Dr Chua Cheng Yu
Dr Chua Cheng Yu is a highly accredited doctor in Singapore and also the man behind Veritas Medical Aesthetics, a leading aesthetic clinic in Singapore unique for proprietary protocols including a 9 medical-grade laser setup. Dr Chua usually combines treatments for the best results, and this includes acne scar removal as well. When it comes to treating acne scars, Dr Chua believes that the usual fractional ablative lasers used at clinics are not the best option as they would either penetrate or ablate the skin surface, causing bacteria and worsening the condition.
His approach is to actually combine ablative and non-ablative lasers as different skin types and acne scars require different lasers. A perfect treatment example would be the BLEND Laser Protocol at Veritas, a proprietary tailored-combination of lasers that treat all types of acne scars and pigmentation. Through this treatment, patients can even expect facial rejuvenation as some of the lasers used can help improve facial laxity!
Thus far, patients who have done laser treatments for acne scar removal with Dr Chua have nothing but brilliant reviews.
Dr Chua’s acne scar treatment of choice however is combining subcision with collagen stimulators, or regenerative treatment. This combination is considered gold standard as subcision damages the incorrectly healed scar tissues that cause acne, while collagen stimulators encourage proper repair of skin. In that sense, Dr Chua not just removes acne scars but also ensures skin heals correctly.
Below are before and after pictures of patients who combined different treatments under Dr Chua’s care. As you can see, their acne scars have improved drastically!
To find out which type of laser works best for you, Dr Chua has a simple chart which can be found on his blog, drcychua.com.

Dr Gerald Tan
Dr Gerald Tan is a MOH-accredited physician with over 12 years of experience in aesthetics medicine. His expertise includes treating common troubling skin conditions like acne scars, pores and pigmentation. For acne scars, Dr Tan has a few treatment options available at his clinic, Aesteem Aesthetic Clinic.
For those with general acne scars, Dr Tan recommends Fotonia Erbium Laser, a non-invasive procedure that uses Er: YAG laser and Nd: YAG laser to stimulate fibroblasts and activate production of new collagen. Typically, a Fotona laser is used to treat different types of skin conditions. Like Dr Chua, Dr Tan also believes in subcision for keloid and icepick acne scars. However, Dr Tan uses Enerjet, a unique Jet Volumetric Remodeling technology that mimics a subcision effect.
Lastly, for severe acne scars, Dr Tan recommends a Secret RF, a “revolutionary treatment” that combines radiofrequency and microneedles to reduce epidermis damage. Patients are given a soothing mask post-treatment.
Here, he gives a breakdown and explanation of all three acne scar treatment types.
Dr Tan may not exactly have a sizable social media presence and following, but he specifically chooses treatments that are backed up by clinical studies, so that’s one of the reasons why we can trust him.

Dr Moses Ng
Dr Moses Ng has worked with an array of patients with a gamut of skin conditions, from children with eczema to teenagers with serious acne. His main clinical interests lie in acne treatments and acne scarring management.
One can easily tell how passionate Dr Ng is about acne — his clinic’s Facebook page is laden with posts about acne, including ways to overcome social anxiety with acne and tips to prevent acne scars.
For acne scar removal, Dr Ng takes a customised approach as patients usually have different types of acne scars that require different treatments. Once he determines the type and grade of acne scarring, he combines treatments specific to each scar type. For example, a patient with red acne scars and mixed acne scarring will undergo pulsed dye laser and INFINI fractional resurfacing, while a patient with moderate to severe mixed acne scarring will undergo TCA CROSS, subcision and INFINI fractional resurfacing.
To date, Dr Ng has helped many satisfied patients deal with their pesky acne scarring issues.
Dr Ng is also competent in treating pregnancy acne, preteen acne and comedonal acne. If you fall in any of those groups or would just like a dedicated acne removal program, we recommend Dr Ng.
